Why mosques use calligraphy instead of images, where you find inscriptions in a mosque, and famous examples.

The Role of Islamic Calligraphy in Mosques

Walk into almost any mosque and you will see words before you see anything else. Calligraphy is the main decorative art of Islamic religious buildings, and it carries both beauty and meaning.

Why calligraphy instead of images?

Islamic religious art generally avoids depicting people and animals in places of worship. Instead, mosques are decorated with calligraphy, geometric patterns and plant-like arabesques. Calligraphy has a special place because it presents the words of the Quran and the names of Allah directly.

Where you find calligraphy in a mosque

  • The mihrab: the niche showing the direction of prayer is often framed with Quranic verses.
  • Domes: circular bands of text frequently run around the inside of the dome.
  • Walls and entrances: long friezes of verses, often in Thuluth or Kufic.
  • Roundels: large circular panels with the names of Allah, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the four caliphs, common in Ottoman mosques.

Famous examples

The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, completed in the late 7th century, carries some of the earliest surviving Quranic inscriptions in a building. Ottoman mosques in Istanbul, and the giant roundels in Hagia Sophia, show how large-scale calligraphy can dominate an interior. In the UAE, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi features calligraphy in Kufic, Naskh and Thuluth scripts.

Bringing that feeling home

Many families recreate this atmosphere in a prayer corner or majlis with a single calligraphy piece, such as Ayat an-Nur or a Bismillah panel.
