For Muslims, calligraphy is more than beautiful lettering. It is closely tied to the Quran, revelation and remembrance of Allah.
The word at the heart of the faith
The first word revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was “Iqra” (Read), and the Quran speaks of the pen: “Who taught by the pen” (Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:4). Writing the words of revelation beautifully has long been seen as an act of devotion and respect.
Calligraphy as remembrance (dhikr)
A verse or name of Allah on the wall is a constant, gentle reminder. Seeing “Bismillah” at the entrance, or “Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel” in a study, brings the meaning to mind many times a day.
Beauty as a form of worship
A well-known hadith teaches that “Allah is beautiful and loves beauty” (Sahih Muslim). Calligraphers often describe their work as combining discipline, patience and humility in service of that beauty.
Respect and etiquette
Because calligraphy may contain Quranic verses, it should be treated with respect: kept clean, hung at a dignified height and kept away from bathrooms. Read our full guide on where to hang Islamic wall art.
